Abstract

The kidney of the golden hamster was shown to play a dominant role in the marked and rapid changes that occur in serum calcium concentration after thyroparathyroidectomy or injection of parathyroid hormone. Acute bilateral nephrectomy, which alone had no effect on serum calcium at 3 hr, completely prevented the 3-hr fall of more than 5 mg Ca/100 ml that occurred after thyroparathyroidectomy. The 7-hr urinary excretion of calcium by hamsters fed a low calcium diet increased approximately 10-fold after thyroparathyroidectomy. Both urinary phosphate and urine volume decreased significantly. Administration of parathyroid hormone to thyroparathyroidectomized hamsters markedly decreased the hypercalciuria and hypophosphaturia and completely prevented the fall in urine volume. The increase in urinary calcium observed after thyroparathyroidectomy was 2–3 times the calculated amount of calcium lost from the extracellular fluid. These findings indicate that increased urinary excretion of calcium after thyroparathyroidectomy in the hamster can entirely account for the acute fall in serum calcium and that maintenance of the normal blood cal - cium concentration in this species depends largely on the action of parathyroid hormone to promote renal reabsorption of calcium.
