A new method of poisoning rabbits by making use of their grooming behaviour is described. The technique consists of laying a trail of a greasy substance carrying a poison (lanolin carrying sodium fluoroacetate was used) along the floor of the burrow. Rabbits tread on the trail, then on to the soil, and ingest the poison when they clean their forepaws.
The low costs of the technique, its effectiveness at any time of the year, and its lack of damage to native mammals and stock suggest that there should be more thorough investigation of its application and potentialities.
