Popular as pets and for their coats in the mid to late 20th century, chinchillas are also important animal models for the study of bacterial otitis media.12,13 They are hardy animals, and seem to be less prone to disease in general than rabbits and other rodents. The popularity of these animals may be waning or their diseases better understood such that pathologic investigation is less common.
