Antoine Giroud, Charles Philippe Leblond, and Rakoto Ratsimamanga: The Vitamin C Requirement of the Guinea-Pig. In: Yale J Biol Med. 1937 July; 9(6): 573–584.
(1) In feeding guinea-pigs with various amounts of alfalfa, beet leaf, cabbage, and pure ascorbic acid, there was a definite relation (approximately logarithmic) between the intake of ascorbic acid and the amounts in the organs. (2) Different doses of ascorbic acid in the diet are needed for prevention of the various changes used as criteria of vitamin C deficiency; the criteria generally used cannot detect slight degrees of deficiency. (3) Very large doses of ascorbic acid, namely, more than 20mg. daily, are necessary to maintain a guinea-pig of 300 grams in a normal state, as defined by absence of knee hemorrhages and normal amount of ascorbic acid in the organs.
